If you can’t get to your polling station

Postal voting

You can now . Note that due to the short election timetable, the timescales involved in getting postal votes set up and sent out is very short. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5:00pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

Anyone applying after 31 May 2024 will not have their postal vote dispatched until around 26 June 2024. You should bear this in mind if you will be on holiday or would like your postal vote sent overseas.

Regardless of when a postal vote is sent out, if it is not received, it is possible to reissue it. However, the law prevents us from reissuing a lost or not received postal vote until the fourth working day before the election, which is Friday 28 June 2024.

We can only send the replacement through the post to the same address as the original. Alternatively, it can be collected from the Elections Office in ¶®ÒõµÛ city centre. You should bear this in mind if you are applying for a postal vote, especially if you are overseas or will be away from ¶®ÒõµÛ around the time of the election.

Proxy voting

Another voting option which may be better in some situations is to appoint a proxy. This is where someone attends your polling station and votes on your behalf. The person you appoint needs to:

  • be over 18
  • be registered to vote
  • not be proxy for more than four voters, including no more than two who live in the UK

The deadline to appoint a proxy is 5:00pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

Proxy voting by post

If you have no-one who can attend your polling station in person, then the person you appoint as a proxy can apply for a postal vote. Your ballot paper will be sent to them by post.

If you take this option, you will need to appoint the proxy, and they will then have to complete an application to be a postal proxy voter. In this case, the deadline for completing both applications is the earlier postal voting deadline.
